Last Friday, adult program participants went through the community capacity building training, which included an asset mapping walk. The Community Capacity Building training challenges us to recognize the potential in any community to contribute to its own healthy development, and provides principles and tools to strengthen its ability to do so.
During the walk, participants observed and discussed the community’s assets. Many times community assets are overlooked, but can play a vital role in building the community’s capacity. An asset can be anything from an open field to a vacant building. Viewing these things as assets instead of eye sores can help us begin to think about their potential and how they can be used to create healthy and sustainable communities.
