Activate: This week participants of the social justice Activate series began to identify the steps to engage “in doing justice.” Students identified the importance of initiating and preventing injustices that they see and/or experience in their respective communities. Following the Trayvon Martin verdict, students expressed disappointment, frustration and confusion about the varying viewpoints heard in the news and social media outlets. Students were provided with space to share their feelings but also to critically examine the issues of race and our institutions in America. Several students also participated in a town hall meeting held at Madison Square. Students have become more aware not only of the injustices in our country, but also with a variety of tools and strategies that can be used to increase awareness as well as begin to combat the oppressive nature of our culture and institutions. “I don’t have to be a victim, there are things I can do to help create change.” Tall Turf student Xavier Edwards.
